It's time for LiSA/CUGM 2009!
Hard to believe, but we're just days away from the start of The Library Corporation's Library•Solution and CARL Users' Annual Conference. LiSA/CUGM 2009 will be held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center along the banks of the Potomac River in National Harbor, Md., just 15 minutes from Washington, D.C.
If you haven't registered, there's still time. The $300-per-person conference fee includes:
- Training and support sessions.
- Informative presentations on a wide range of TLC products and services including LS2 PAC, LS2 Kids, Library•Solution, CARL•X, LS Circ, Online Selection and Acquisitions, and more.
- Updates on product upgrades that enhance the performance and functionality of TLC products.
- Developers' tips and tricks.
- Special presentations to help you harness the power of Google Analytics, seek funding from Grants.gov, understand the benefits of RFID technology, learn about video streaming, and more.
- A meet-and-greet session on the evening of Sept. 28.
- Three breakfasts and two lunches.

LiSA/CUGM 2009 will also feature an exciting lineup of guest speakers including David Henderson (communications strategist, author, online publisher, and Emmy Award-winning former CBS Network News correspondent), Art Murray (CEO of Applied Knowledge Sciences, co-director of the Enterprise of the Future Program at the George Washington University Institute for Knowledge and Innovation, and an expert on teaching librarians how to become knowledge brokers for their communities), and Leslie Pietrzyk (author of the novels “A Year and a Day” and “Pears on a Willow Tree”). Additionally, there will be ample opportunities for networking and relaxing during the conference, including an optional water taxi ride to downtown Alexandria, Va., on the evening of Sept. 30.
Accommodations for LiSA/CUGM 2009 are being offered at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center. For information on room rates, availability, and reservations, visit www.gaylordnational.com or call 1.301.965.2000. And when you arrive at the hotel, be sure to congratulate Deborah Cooke of Chesterfield County Public Schools in Richmond, Va., Jae Luree King of Mother Whiteside Memorial Library in Grants, N.M., and Ramon Wheeler of Tangipahoa Parish Library in Amite, La. They each won use of an executive suite at the Gaylord in TLC's special prize drawings to encourage early registration for the conference.
If you haven't done so, please register for LiSA/CUGM 2009 today by visiting www.tlcdelivers.com/lisacugm/2009/registrationform.asp. Something new this year is the opportunity to attend the LiSA portion of the conference on any day of your choice for just $95 per day. The special one-day attendee registration form for Sept. 29, Sept. 30, or Oct 1 is available at www.tlcdelivers.com/lscustomer/lisa-2009/lisa-cugm-2009.asp.
If you need more information, contact Lisa Prodywus at 1.304.229.0100 or lprodywus@TLCdelivers.com. 'Balancing Facebook with face-to-face'
An article that appeared earlier this month in The Beacon News of Illinois had good things to say about LS2 PAC's implementation at the Aurora Public Library, which joined TLC's family of customers earlier this year. You can link to Judy Buchenot's report on using computers to stay connected at The Beacon News.
LS2 PAC version 1.6 released
A significant update to LS2 PAC was released August 25. Some of the new features you'll find in version 1.6 of TLC's beautiful automation software include:
- Advanced Search functionality that allows borrowers to search for items by author, ISBN, keyword, note, subject, tag, title, or UPC.
- Volume information displays in the holdings area and the Place a Request dialog.
- “Did you mean” suggestions for misspelled search terms that can now include two words. For example, the incorrectly entered “Harri Poter” would yield suggestions of “Harry Potter” and “Harris Peter.”
- The implementation of Online Borrower Registration (OBR), allowing borrowers to receive a temporary barcode by filling out a short form. This feature is available to Library•Solution customers only and can be turned on or off per configuration. In order to have it activated, LS2 PAC customers must purchase OBR.
- The option for a borrower to change his or her EZ Log On user name.
- An option to include alternate cover art for items in a library's online catalog.
- Printer-friendly versions of items in the Description tab.
- Check boxes and gray fonts that are more visible.
- The ability to purge user accounts in the LS2 PAC's Administration interface.
- Enhancements that allow library administrators to configure Google Analytics per configuration in the My Account drawer instead of having to contact the TLC Support Department.
For more information about version 1.6 of LS2 PAC, log on to TLC's Knowledge Base.
Data Dictionary
The Data Dictionary for the Library•Solution 4.x Reports Manager and for CARL•X Ad Hoc Reports are now available for download in the Documentation section of the TLC customer web site, accessible at www.tlcdelivers.com/tlc/login.asp. These comprehensive documents contain a list of the most commonly used tables, views, and functions in L.S Reports Manager and CARL•X Ad Hoc Reports, and provide descriptions of the information contained within for customers with the report-authoring tools. L.S Reports Manager and CARL•X Ad Hoc users are encouraged to download the information at their convenience.
Join TLC on Facebook, Twitter
The Library Corporation invites you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Each social-media site offers its own unique amenities. For example, TLC has used its Twitter account to pass along news of importance to libraries and librarians. The Facebook account is another information resource that also incorporates photos and videos of the TLC team and a discussion area for visitors to share their thoughts. But it's not all business, because TLC's Facebook fans and Twitter followers are often treated to light-hearted stories and special features that help break the monotony of a workday.
Those who don't have Facebook or Twitter accounts can still stay on top of TLC developments via RSS feeds. Visitors to www.TLCdelivers.com can click on the RSS logo in their Internet browser's address bar and subscribe to TLC's e-Edition or Calendar of Events. (If the logo is not visible in the address bar, subscribe by visiting www.tlcdelivers.com/enews/rss.asp or www.tlcdelivers.com/tlc/tlcandyou/calendar-rss.asp.) There is no charge for the service, and updates will be automatically posted in the user's RSS reader of choice, including Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Outlook.
TLC is pleased to use these advancing technologies to further its mission of being an open, accessible company eager to serve its current and prospective clientele.
TLC is always here to help
The Library Corporation prides itself on customer service, so it offers several ways for its valued clients to seek help and stay informed.
Library•Solution®, Library•Solution® for Schools, and CARL users can access relevant customer Web sites at http://www.tlcdelivers.com/tlc/login.asp. Log in and find up-to-date news and information about user groups, services, products, software updates, new releases, and more. The CARL Users Forum – a customer-to-customer communication channel that allows CARL customers to share important ideas and observations beyond the annual CARL Users Group meeting – also is accessible through this log-in portal.
TLC's Knowledge Base, commonly referred to as the KB, is an online repository of information that facilitates communication between TLC and Library•Solution users. Access it often for important product news, software updates, and a vast array of expert insight. Log on to the TLC Knowledge Base. If you have problems or questions about using the KB, call TLC Support at 1.800.852.4911.
The Online Support Center is an interactive, Web-based system that allows you to communicate with the TLC Support Team, decide your issue's priority, and track its resolution. When you use the OSC, you'll complete a short online form called a “support request.” TLC technicians will immediately respond via e-mail. As they work on your issue, you can check its status in the OSC at any time. After resolution of your request, you'll receive an e-mail noting the problem and the solution.
Of course, you can always contact TLC's Support Team via phone, e-mail, and fax. Friendly, knowledgeable individuals are on staff in Inwood from 7:30 a.m. to midnight (EST) weekdays, and in Denver from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (MDT). Emergency support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
